Nepal’s systems fail because they are too slow, too manual, and too reliant on human intervention. The limitations of current monitoring technologies are well-documented: existing equipment can detect changes in glacier movement but is insufficient to prevent events like the Langtang Lirung collapse.

Installing such systems in challenging terrain like the Himalayas is a daunting task. As Philip Prince, a geologist at Virginia Tech, noted, the terrain and vastness of the region make it impossible to install and maintain effective monitoring systems. This disaster highlights the need for a more layered approach to early warning systems that incorporates multiple technologies, including satellite imaging, seismic monitoring, and automated alert systems.

Nepal must invest in resilient monitoring systems, map risks more effectively, and automate warning systems to reach communities at risk faster. But this is not just an issue for Nepal or even the Himalayas; it’s a global problem. As glaciers melt worldwide due to climate change, we can expect more frequent and severe glacier collapses.
